Handicraft in Nepal

‘Handicraft’ means product as craft prepare by hand. There is no universally acceptable definition of handicraft because of considering not only the many variables involved but also the diverse purpose.
But it can be said that handicraft simply means any object made by hand with or without the use of tools, simple instrument for day-to-day use, ritual and decorative purpose. In the industrialized countries, handicrafts are popularly conceived of mainly as ethnic products with little utilitarian value. They are categorized as curios, tourist souvenirs or as items of artistic interest, but seldom as articles for daily use.

Handicrafts are marketed as items with functional use, fittings into people’s life-styles at home, at work; at leisure etc. Their narrow restricted image immediately disappears. Their ethnic and cultural aspect is toned down giving way to a more utilization image. The customer can then regard crafts in terms of floor coverings wall hangings room dividers, kitchen or table items etc. In additions one could recommend dropping the use of the term handcrafts on markets where the term is basically associated with cheap curios.
